What Causes Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain is incredibly common, and most of us will experience it at some point in our lives. The good news is that it isn’t always caused by something serious. In many cases, it’s the result of everyday habits, repetitive movements or changes that develop gradually over time.

I often remind my patients that the lower back works hard every single day. It supports your body when you sit, stand, bend, lift, walk and exercise. If one part of the body isn’t moving well, other muscles and joints often compensate, which can eventually lead to discomfort.

Common causes of lower back pain include muscle strains, poor posture, prolonged sitting, repetitive lifting, sporting activities, pregnancy, age-related changes and previous injuries. Stress and poor sleep can also make existing pain feel worse.

During your assessment, I’ll look beyond the area that’s painful to identify the factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. Understanding the cause helps us choose the most appropriate treatment and gives you practical advice to reduce the likelihood of the pain returning.
