Why Can the Painful Area Be Different from the Area You Treat?

This sometimes confuses patients.

You may come in pointing to one very specific painful spot and then wonder why I’m assessing the joints and muscles around it.

The body doesn’t move as a collection of isolated parts. The way one area moves can influence the demands placed on another.

Pain can also sometimes be felt away from the structure contributing to the symptoms.

That’s why I look at the bigger picture. I’m not ignoring where it hurts — I promise! I’m trying to understand what may be contributing to it.
