Why Is My Back Stiff in the Morning?

Many people tell me they feel their stiffest first thing in the morning, only to find that they loosen up once they’ve started moving around.

There are several possible reasons for this. During sleep, we’re naturally less active, so our joints and muscles aren’t moving as they do during the day. Sleeping position, mattress support, previous injuries, muscle tension and certain medical conditions can all contribute to morning stiffness.

Sometimes it’s simply a sign that your body needs a little time to warm up. Gentle stretching, a short walk or even a warm shower may help ease stiffness before starting your day.

However, if morning stiffness is becoming more frequent, lasting longer or affecting your quality of life, it’s worth arranging an assessment. Identifying the underlying cause allows us to recommend the most appropriate treatment and self-care strategies to help you move more comfortably.
